Why Can a Light Shipment Have a High Chargeable Weight?

Because aircraft space matters, not only physical weight.

Consider a shipment measuring 100 × 80 × 60 cm with an actual gross weight of 40 kg. Using a 6,000 volumetric divisor: 100 × 80 × 60 ÷ 6,000 = 80 kg. The simplified comparison is therefore: Actual Weight: 40 kg versus Volumetric Weight: 80 kg. The applicable chargeable basis may therefore be 80 kg, subject to the airline's actual rating rules.

Important: A 6,000 divisor is commonly used for metric air-cargo volumetric calculations, but the applicable carrier, service, tariff and rounding rules should always be confirmed.

Why Can a Light Shipment Have a High Chargeable Weight?

Because aircraft space matters, not only physical weight.

Consider a shipment measuring 100 × 80 × 60 cm with an actual gross weight of 40 kg. Using a 6,000 volumetric divisor: 100 × 80 × 60 ÷ 6,000 = 80 kg. The simplified comparison is therefore: Actual Weight: 40 kg versus Volumetric Weight: 80 kg. The applicable chargeable basis may therefore be 80 kg, subject to the airline's actual rating rules.
