What Is Chargeable Weight in Air Freight?

Chargeable weight is the weight used as a key basis for air freight rating. In common air freight practice, the shipment's actual gross weight is compared with its volumetric weight, and the applicable higher value may become the chargeable weight. The final rating remains subject to the airline, carrier, consolidator, service, trade lane and shipment-specific rules.

Gross Weight

Gross weight is the actual physical weight of the shipment, including the packaged cargo presented for transportation. It is normally expressed in kilograms (kg).

Volumetric Weight

Volumetric weight converts the physical space occupied by cargo into a weight-equivalent figure using the applicable dimensional divisor.

Chargeable Weight

Chargeable weight is generally determined by comparing actual gross weight and volumetric weight and applying the relevant carrier rating rules.

Air Freight Chargeable Weight Formula

For dimensions measured in centimeters:

Volumetric Weight = L × W × H × Quantity ÷ Divisor
Chargeable Weight = Higher of Gross Weight or Volumetric Weight

Gross Weight vs Volumetric Weight

Air cargo can be either weight-dense or space-intensive. Two shipments with the same actual weight can occupy very different amounts of aircraft cargo space. This is why dimensional weight is important in air freight planning.

When Gross Weight Is Higher

A compact but heavy shipment may have a gross weight that exceeds its volumetric weight.

Example: If actual gross weight is 500 kg and estimated volumetric weight is 320 kg, the planning chargeable weight would be 500 kg before any applicable rounding or minimum-rating rules.

This situation is more common with dense cargo that contains significant weight within a relatively compact volume.

When Volumetric Weight Is Higher
